Meg on the FES bike

MAY 29, 2009

Well it is finally Friday and we had a long week.  Again the day started early with Physical therapy at 9:00am.  Today she was put on the FES (functional electrical stimulation) bike.  Electrodes were put on Meg's legs and and electrical current was administered to the muscles on her quads, hamstrings and gluts.  This Electrical current stimulates the muscles to contract and while they are contracting she is hooked up to a bike.  She loved this.  Meg said it was strange sensation to see her legs move but not be able to feel them.

We had a big meeting today with the doctors, therapists, and social workers.  It was very positive and encouraging.  Craig Hospital is really top notch.  Meg is very fortunate to be here.  Her doctor said that she is doing really well with her rehab, in fact she is doing better than most, and has taken off like a "race horse".  I am so proud of her.

Meg's next step is to continue to build strength and mobility.  This includes bed mobility, getting dressed, and propelling her new manual wheelchair.  We are also going to start working on her return to work and looking for a new home.  While we have to hope for the best, we must also prepare for the worst.

Again we had more visitors today which is ALWAYS welcome!  We are staying out of the room because it is too small.  But we leave word with the front desk as to where we are.  Therapy will continue over the weekend via me and Kate.  But for the most part she will have a break.
